Affordable housing for low-income people living in poverty in both urban and rural areas was the goal of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). The Yojana would see the construction of over 20 million affordable dwellings. A 66% increase in funding was made to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, reaching around Rs. 79,000 crore in 2023. There are two parts to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana:
The system is further connected to other projects, such as:
The primary goal of PMAY-U is to provide all eligible households and beneficiaries without a pucca home in cities and towns with affordable housing. Basic facilities including a kitchen, power, toilet, and water supply would be provided in every home under PMAY-U.
By granting property or a home in the female member’s name or in joint names, this program empowers women. This initiative prioritizes disadvantaged and vulnerable populations, including minorities, the elderly, persons with disabilities, SCs, STs, OBCs, single women, transgender individuals, and others.
The Union Cabinet gave its approval in August 2022 for PMAY-U to continue till December 31, 2024. 118.64 lakh homes have been sanctioned for this project as of July 15, 2024, and 84.7 lakh have been finished.
The primary goal of PMAY-G is to provide pucca dwellings to all rural households that are either homeless or living in Kutcha huts. In order to offer basic amenities to homes, including power, drinking water, clean and efficient cooking fuel, toilets, and the disposal of solid and liquid waste, this program works in conjunction with other government programs.
The Central and State Governments would split the cost of each unit of aid under this plan in the following ratios: 60:40 for plain areas and 90:10 for North Eastern states, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir. 63 lakh homes have been finished as of July 15, 2024, and 94 lakh units have been approved for this project.
House: Under PMAY-G, recipients will receive a home of at least 25 square meters. Depending on their categorization (EWS, LIG, MIG), the beneficiaries of PMAY-U will receive a home that ranges in size from 30 square meters to 200 square meters with carpet.
Support: The Swachh Bharat Mission (G) would provide Rs. 12,000 in support to the PMAY-G recipients for the building of a restroom. Additionally, they would receive a unit support of Rs. 1.20 lakh in the plains and Rs. 1.30 lakh in the hill states, IAP/worst hit Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) regions, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, North Eastern States, and tough places. Under PMAY-U, each EWS household would receive Rs. 1.5 lakh in central aid.
Land ownership: Under PMAY, the government would give landless people access to government land or any other type of public property so they may build homes.
Women’s empowerment: If the land and homes are given to the local women or to the husband and wife, the authority of women in the nation will increase.
Interest subsidy: PMAY recipients will get interest subsidies from Primary Lending Institutions (PLIs) on housing loans for the purchase or new construction of homes.
Better socioeconomic standing: The homes given to homeless families will raise their standard of living and socioeconomic standing. Better health, education, and general well-being will result from a home equipped with all the conveniences.
Slum reduction: By giving slum residents a pucca dwelling, the PMAY-U will contribute to the reduction of slums in towns and cities. This would help attract slum dwellers to the formal urban settlement.
Direct Transfer: The recipients receive their financial aid through an electronic transfer to their Aadhaar-connected bank or post office accounts. As a result, it lowers the likelihood of fraud and guarantees that the recipients get their money.
