The Honourable Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, introduced the program. Teachers’ Day, September 5, 2022, marked the program’s debut. On September 7, 2022, the union cabinet gave its approval to the plan. The government will modernize the schools as part of this program. The national government provides all of the funding for the scheme. The current academy year of 2022–2023 will see the implementation of this strategy by the government. The PM Shri schools project will cost the government rupees 27,360 crores over a five-year period.

Minister of Union Education Dharmendra Pradhan unveiled the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) school selection portal on November 3, 2022. Through the portal, state governments can choose which schools would become PM SHRI schools.
