National Digital Library:- Libraries are storehouses of knowledge because they keep books and other knowledge resources available – mostly in printed form. However, with the advent of digital technology and internet connectivity, the library is changing rapidly. Digital technology, internet connectivity, and physical materials can be linked together resulting in a digital library. The data available in physical form is preserved digitally in the digital library. Digital libraries have the capability to increase the reach of information and knowledge. They also bridge the obstacles of time and space. Initiatives have been taken in the past by various Ministries/Departments/Organizations to digitize and preserve data available in physical form. However, this activity has mostly been confined to the area of work/interest of the organization. The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) has also supported projects in the area of digital library initiatives in the past.

A digital library is a library in which the collection of books is in digital or electronic format. It can be used through electronic devices and computers. A digital library is also known as an online library, Internet library, digital repository, or digital archive. It is an online database of digital objects, which may include text, images, audio, video, and books in the form of digital documents. This type of library can be accessed through the Internet. The major difference is that in a digital library, the resources are available only in machine-readable form.
How The Digital Library Started
In other words, in digital libraries, documents are stored in an organized electronic format and accessed through the Internet or CD-ROM discs. In 1994, the term digital library was first used by the NASA Digital Library. American author Michael Stern Hart is the founder of the first digital library project. Hart made electronic books available for free via the Internet. The user can access the magazine’s articles, books, pictures, sound files, letters, and videos using a computer. Digital libraries, like traditional libraries, receive, disseminate, and preserve collections through digital means.
Digital Library is also recognized in Kharagpur
One of the best examples of the digital library is the National Digital Library of India, Kharagpur. Though, This Digital Library of India is a premier library of the Indian freedom struggle which is available to all on the internet. Books are searchable and available to read free of charge. In addition to this, it also provides online links to six major Indian newspapers.
