Digital Locker is an Indian digitization online service provided by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India under its Digital India initiative. DigiLocker provides each Aadhaar holder with an account in the cloud to access authentic documents/certificates such as driver licenses, vehicle registration, and educational mark sheets in digital format from the original issuers of these certificates. It also provides 1GB of storage space in each account for uploading scanned copies of legacy documents. To use DigiLocker, users must have an Aadhaar number. For sign-up, one needs to enter the Aadhaar number and a one-time password sent to the Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
The beta version of the service was launched in February 2015 and launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1 July 2015. The storage space provided was initially 100MB and later increased to 1GB. So Individual file size for upload cannot exceed 10MB. In July 2016, DigiLocker registered 2.013 million users with 2.413 million stored documents.
The number of users saw a massive jump of 753,000 in April when the government urged all municipal bodies to use DigiLocker to make their administration paperless. In 2017, this facility was expanded to allow ICSE board students to store their Class X and Class XII certificates in DigiLocker and share them with agencies as and when required. So In February 2017, Kotak Mahindra Bank began providing access to documents in DigiLocker from its net-banking application, allowing users to e-sign them and forward them as needed. So In May 2017, over 108 hospitals including Tata Memorial Hospital were planning to start using DigiLocker to store medical documents and test reports of cancer patients.
